Steven Gerrard in frame for Rangers return after Martin gets the sack.

The former Rangers boss is under serious review for a shock return to Rangers following the official dismissal of manager Russell Martin.

The manager's disastrous time in charge concludes

Martin's ill-fated period in Glasgow ended with the gaffer leaving the Falkirk Stadium via a rear entrance and a waiting car after a 1-1 draw which left the Ibrox club 11 points from the peak of the Scottish Premiership after just seven fixtures.

Furious fans had surrounded the squad transport in the away ground, showing their discontent.

Ibrox directors hesitant to dismiss the manager

The Rangers board had been hesitant to let go of the former Swansea boss, who was only hired in last month, despite strong objections from the fanbase.

However, there was an understanding that the 39-year-old’s job had become unsustainable.

The team have managed only one win of their league fixtures to date, which has been combined with disappointing displays in European competition.

In total, Martin secured just five victories of 17 competitive matches, with a uninspiring, confused footballing philosophy that gained little support.

“Even though changeovers take a while, outcomes have fallen short of the team's standards,” said a Rangers statement on the weekend.

“Assistant head coach Gill, and first-team staff member Mike Williamson, will also be leaving. Russell and his backroom team have worked exceptionally hard throughout their tenure. We thank them for their efforts and send best wishes for the time ahead.”

The former manager secured the championship with the club

The former England captain claimed the league with the Glasgow club in the 2020-21 season, their sole title since over a decade ago.

His achievements in Scotland before then, alongside difficulties at Villa, creates uncertainty about his managerial capabilities.

Yet he is held in high esteem by the very group of supporters the team desperately need back on side.

The return of the former Reds star, who previously worked in the Middle East, would be widely welcomed.

The manager will also be conscious of what few options he has to be a manager in top-tier competitions.

The departure will intensify scrutiny on the sporting director

The manager's departure will increase pressure on Kevin Thelwell, the Ibrox director.

He had been strongly in favor of the coach while announcing a transfer outlay of £20m in the summer window.

The ex-manager had put pen to paper on a multi-year agreement.

The coach's earlier positions

The manager, who had formerly managed the League One side and the Swans, led the Saints to a rise to the English football's elite in 2024 after being appointed the prior offseason.

He was sacked last the end of the year after the the club secured just a single victory of their initial 16 matches.

He was named the former captain's next in line in June, after the temporary manager had taken over from the fired the former manager in winter.
