Ex- FBI head James the former director has entered an innocent plea to providing misleading information to lawmakers and hindering a lawmaking procedure.

His attorney submitted the plea acting as his counsel in a US district court in Alexandria, Virginia on Wednesday morning.

Patrick Fitzgerald stated he would attempt to have the case dismissed for various reasons including that his client, a critic of former President Trump, was being singled out.

The former director was formally accused soon after Trump urged his chief prosecutor to move forward against him.

Judicial Process

At the proceedings on mid-week, Comey's lawyer the legal representative informed the magistrate they planned to file several motions to throw out the case before a trial, stating the legal action was retaliatory and that a government lawyer was unlawfully designated to take over the case.

James Comey's case was initially handled by Erik Siebert, who stepped down under influence from Donald Trump after his probe into an additional opponent - NY AG Letitia James - failed to bring criminal charges.

Legal Setting

Mr Comey came across in positive mood as he came into the courtroom on mid-week, chatting with his attorneys and sharing humor. He was accompanied by his partner, Patrice Failor and daughter Maureen Comey, a government attorney who the previous administration dismissed.

Following the reading to the magistrate read his legal protections and the pair of allegations against him in the courtroom on mid-week, the defendant was asked if he grasped the accusations.

"I do your honour. Thank you," he informed the court.

Background Context

Mr Comey was the head of the FBI from four years and was fired about a few months into the former president's initial presidency as national leader. At the moment, Mr Comey was overseeing an examination into Russian election interference and whether there were any links between Russia and the election effort.

While in office, the director triggered a counter-response from the Democratic party when he stated just immediately preceding the 2016 election that he was examining presidential nominee Clinton's use of a private email server. Indictments against Hillary Clinton were not filed, leading to criticism from conservative politicians as well.

Ongoing Accusations

Government attorneys assert Mr Comey lied to US lawmakers during a Senate Judiciary Committee hearing in September 2020 when he was being examined about both the previous examination as well as the foreign influence inquiry. They say he deceived the upper house by claiming he had not approved someone at the FBI to disclose to journalistic entities information about the agency probes.

Legal representatives also accuse Mr Comey of "improperly attempting to influence, hinder and impede" the legislative group by providing untrue information to it.

Personal Comments

Via social media James Comey published to his online platform after he was accused, he stated he was wrongly accused and charged the former president of conducting himself like a "tyrant".

"Our household have understood for a long time that there are costs to standing up to Mr Trump," he stated. "We will not live on our bended knee."

"I have done nothing wrong," he continued. "Therefore proceed with a legal proceeding."

The accusations against the former director surfaced after Trump published on digital channels calling for his chief prosecutor, the attorney general, take legal action against Mr Comey and other people.
