Fianna Fáil candidate Jim Gavin stated his withdrawal from the race for Ireland's head of state immediately.

He was scheduled to be a candidate among three competing for the Irish presidency, beside Independent TD Catherine Connolly and Heather Humphreys of Fine Gael.

Nonetheless, Sunday night he said in a statement that he "erred inconsistent with his values and the standards I set myself."

"After weighing these points, I have decided to leave the election for president with immediate effect and go back to my family," he declared in his announcement.
