Ex- Australian Lawmaker Imprisoned for Over 60 Months for Sexual Offenses
A former Australian politician found guilty of assaulting two individuals connected through his position received a sentence to 69 months in detention.
Trial Information
The defendant, forty-four, remained in custody since mid-year after the court determined his guilt of attacking an individual and sexually abusing another, in multiple events in 2013 then 2015.
The politician represented the oceanfront municipality of the regional area in the New South Wales government from over a decade ago. He resigned as a Liberal Party cabinet member when accusations surfaced in 2021 but declined to leave the legislature and was re-elected in 2023.
Judgment Information
Judge the judicial figure took into account the defendant's condition of sight disability in the judgment and determined "no different consequence except for incarceration could be considered".
The defendant, who was present via digital means at the courthouse, will complete at minimum 45 months in detention before he can apply for parole.
The judge declared the legal system needs to "deliver a strong warning to similar individuals that criminal acts of this nature will be subject to serious punishments".

Additionally stated the convicted man had "evaded consequences for ten years and experienced freedom free from a programme or consequence for the offenses during those years".
Post-trial, the individual attempted a rejected legal bid to remain in government and left office just prior to the legislature could oust him.
His legal team has indicated before he plans to appeal the guilty verdict.
Case Facts
His nine-week trial in the judicial venue learned that he brought a drunk 18-year-old man to his property in 2013 and indecently assaulted him on multiple occasions, despite his attempts to oppose.
In 2015, he raped a 24-year-old office worker at his home after a gathering at parliament.
He had maintained the 2015 rape was fabricated, and that the additional accuser was confused about their meeting from the first incident.
However, prosecutors argued that significant resemblances in the testimonies of the victims, who had no connection to one another, showed they were accurate in their accounts.
Court members considered for 72 hours before returning the guilty verdicts.
The political exit led to a special election in his constituency in last fall, which was secured by the opposition party.
