Brave Train Employee Endures Life-Threatening Wounds Amid Multiple Knife Attack on Express Service

A courageous train employee who intervened to protect travelers during a mass stabbing attack on a express train has suffered critical wounds, police confirmed on Sunday.

Details of the Frightening Incident

Surveillance footage reportedly depicts the staff member trying to halt the attacker as the train traveled between a city and another station in Cambridgeshire. Witnesses described a frightening 14-minute duration after the train departed Peterborough, with bloodied victims fleeing through carriages.

The suspect, a 32-year-old British national from Peterborough, is in custody for interrogation. Authorities declared a major event on the 6:25 pm service from Peterborough to King's Cross in central London.

Emergency Reaction and Aftermath

The event on Saturday night resulted in 11 people being cared for in hospital after the train made an unscheduled stop at platform 2 in Huntingdon. Several individuals have since been released from hospital.

A bystander recorded the suspect brandishing a large knife and being subdued with a stun device as he confronted police on the station. He was allegedly heard shouting, "Kill me, kill me."

“This awful event has created broad consequences. Our sympathies go out to the injured and their loved ones – especially the brave employee of rail staff whose family are being assisted by trained personnel,” said a high-ranking police officer.

Labor Response and Appeals for Action

Train associations were quick to praise employees and call for more action. A union official said he would be “seeking urgent discussions with government, train companies and police to ensure that we have the best available support, tools and robust protocols in operation”.

A different association leader encouraged the rail company and authorities “to move quickly to review security, to support the affected workers, and to make sure that no incident like this occurs again”.

Operator Commended for Rapid Action

The train driver who halted the train at Huntingdon was described as being “deeply affected” but “well”, and has been praised by association officials for doing “exactly the right thing”.

“The driver didn’t halt the service in the center of two stops where it’s clearly difficult for the emergency services to access, but he carried on going until he arrived to Huntingdon, where the assistance was pretty much already there,” explained a union representative.

Further Information

Police stated they received the first distress reports at 7:39 pm, and the train was compelled to make an unscheduled stop in Huntingdon at 7:50 pm.

One witness described initially wondering if the event was a holiday joke, but quickly realized from people's expressions that it was real.

Police have stated there is no evidence to suggest the incident was a terrorist attack and have requested the public to provide with any additional details.

Rail services on the affected route are expected to have disruption until the following day, with travelers advised to postpone their travel where feasible.

Anyone with information that could help the inquiry are encouraged to contact authorities by sending a message a designated number with a reference code.
